Shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode which product to buy, and they get a shortlist of 3 or 4 names back. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is how your brand gets on that list. Here's how the engines actually choose, the short playbook for a Shopify store, and why the right goal is getting found for the products that make you money.

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand and products named, and your pages cited, when shoppers ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews what to buy. For an ecommerce brand, it decides whether you're in the answer or nowhere near it.

It matters now because the traffic converts. Adobe's retail data shows AI referrals to US retail sites grew 62% year on year in July 2026, and those visits converted 60% better than non-AI traffic, with 53% more revenue per visit. In March, Shopify switched on Agentic Storefronts, making merchants' products discoverable in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Mode and the Gemini app by default.

Most brands still aren't in those answers. A study by Victorious of 175 brands across 8 AI platforms found 89% never appeared when AI answered category research questions, even though 96% were described accurately when asked about by name. The AI knows who you are, it just doesn't recommend you. The fix is the playbook below, with one rule most AEO advice misses: get found in ChatGPT for the products that make you money.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization (answer engine optimisation in British spelling). An answer engine is any AI tool that replies with a written answer instead of a list of 10 links: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO is the practice of making your brand the one those answers name.

You'll also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization), LLMO or AI SEO. The labels differ, the job is the same. In marketing terms, AEO is a discovery channel that sits next to SEO and paid search, with one big difference for a Shopify brand: the shopper gets a shortlist of 3 or 4 products, so if you're not on it there's no position 7 to fall back on.

AEO doesn't replace SEO. Google's own guidance says a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and every other assistant on this list leans on web search too, so search fundamentals still feed the answers. We cover the overlap in AEO vs SEO.

How does AEO work?

Every answer engine does a mix of 2 things: it remembers, and it looks things up. Then it decides who to trust. Here's each step in plain English.

Diagram of how an AI assistant picks products: a shopper prompt about linen trousers for summer, training data, live search fanned out into 4 sub-queries, the pages it reads (product page, reviews, Reddit, press), an agreement check, then an answer with citations
How ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI features get from a question to a short list of named products. Sources: Google Search Central, Google, Bing, OpenAI, Modern Retail.

1. Training data: what the model already knows

A model like GPT or Claude learns from a huge snapshot of the web up to a cutoff date. If your brand was mentioned often and consistently before that cutoff, in reviews, press, forums and round-ups, the model already has a view of you before anyone searches. OpenAI's GPTBot collects that training data, and OpenAI's crawler docs say blocking it doesn't stop you appearing in ChatGPT search, which uses a separate bot, OAI-SearchBot. So you can opt out of training and still be found, as long as robots.txt lets the search bot in.

2. Live search: what it looks up right now

For anything current (prices, stock, "best X in 2026") the assistant searches while it writes. Perplexity's help centre says it searches the internet in real time and numbers its citations, Claude searches the web when a question needs it, and Microsoft Copilot grounds its answers in Bing's index. Google is blunt about AI Overviews: no special markup, AI text files or schema are needed, the page just has to be in the index.

3. Query fan-out: one question becomes many searches

Shoppers don't type keywords into ChatGPT, they ask long questions. Google says AI Mode uses query fan-out, breaking a question into subtopics and running many searches at once. "Best linen trousers for summer under $120" might become separate searches for breathable linen, Reddit threads on whether linen creases, 2026 reviews and price. Ahrefs' guide to query fan-out goes deeper on how it works. The takeaway for a Shopify brand: your product page doesn't have to win the whole question, it has to be the best answer to one of the sub-questions.

4. Citations: the pages it credits

Most answers now link to their sources, and those citations are the closest thing AEO has to rankings. Bing Webmaster Tools now has an AI Performance report showing how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers, and the searches behind them. It's free, and it's the best first look most brands can get.

5. Agreement: why reviews and Reddit matter

Before it names a product, the engine wants backup. Bing's search team wrote in May 2026 that not answering is a valid outcome "when support is missing, stale, or conflicting". In practice, your claims have to match what reviewers, Reddit threads, press and round-ups say about you.

Modern Retail reported that ChatGPT's shopping research is trained to favour review sites and Reddit over spammy or overly commercial pages, and the Victorious study found only 4 of 150 brands earned a citation to their own website. Most of the time, AI recommends you on someone else's word. We go deeper in how ChatGPT recommends products.

AEO for ecommerce: the playbook in short

Here's the short version for a Shopify store. The full checklist, with examples, is in our AEO for ecommerce playbook.

The ecommerce AEO playbook as 8 levers in 3 groups: on your site (crawlers, product pages, collection pages, FAQs and comparisons), in your data (product schema, feeds and catalog), off your site (reviews, Reddit, press and round-up mentions)
8 AEO levers for a Shopify store, worked through highest contribution margin first.
  1. Let the AI crawlers in. Check robots.txt and any bot protection on your CDN don't block OAI-SearchBot, Bingbot, Googlebot or PerplexityBot, and submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google.
  2. Product pages that answer buyer questions. Who it's for, what it's made of, how it fits and how it compares, in plain text on the page. Modern Retail found many AI bots struggle with JavaScript, so details hidden in tabs, widgets and review apps can be missed.
  3. Collection pages written as buying guides. A collection page that says which product suits which buyer ("best for hot weather", "best under $100") answers the sub-questions fan-out creates.
  4. FAQs and honest comparisons. "X vs Y" pages, size guides and FAQs are shaped like the questions shoppers ask. Be fair to competitors, because the engine checks your claims against other sources.
  5. Product schema. Mark up price, availability, ratings and return policy with schema.org Product markup. Google doesn't require it for AI Overviews, but its product structured data guide uses it for richer merchant results, and shopping answers need machine-readable price and stock. Check what your theme actually outputs.
  6. Clean product feeds and catalog. Titles, variants, GTINs and stock that match your site. Shopify Catalog feeds Agentic Storefronts with structured product data, and the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe is how checkout inside chat works.
  7. Detailed reviews. Detail beats star counts. Modern Retail reported that ChatGPT named Fireclay Tile the best DTC tile company in California on the strength of its reviews, and its CEO credits in-depth reviews for AI recommendations.
  8. Reddit, press and round-up mentions. Get into the gift guides, "best of" lists and threads AI reads. Victorious found referring domains and third-party mentions both correlated with AI mentions (0.49 and 0.45).

Judge AI visibility by contribution margin, not share of voice

Most AEO trackers report share of voice: how often you're named across a set of prompts. It's a useful number and a misleading one on its own, because it counts every product the same. Your P&L doesn't.

Two products each named in 30% of AI answers: Product A earns $8 contribution margin per order, $1,600 a month on 200 orders; Product B earns $24 per order, $4,800 a month
Same share of voice, 3 times the profit. Illustrative example store, not real data.

Take 2 products that AI names equally often. The bestseller makes $8 of contribution margin per order after COGS, shipping, fees and ad spend, and the high-margin line makes $24. Same share of voice, 3 times the profit from the second one. If you only have time to fix 10 product pages this quarter, that's the order to fix them in. So run AEO the way you'd run ad spend:

  1. Rank your products by contribution margin per order and in total, not by revenue. The contribution margin calculator works for a quick check on a few lines.
  2. Check stock. Don't chase visibility for a line you're about to sell out of, and do push overstocked high-margin lines before they turn into dead stock.
  3. Write the 5 to 10 prompts a buyer of each top product would ask, and test them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google.
  4. Fix the playbook items for those products first, then re-test every month.

This is where StoreHero already helps: it calculates contribution margin per product from your Shopify, ad, shipping and fee data, so step 1 is a report rather than a spreadsheet. The product profitability report skill runs it inside Claude or ChatGPT through the StoreHero MCP. AEO is also one of the jobs on our list in how to implement AI in an ecommerce business.

How to measure AEO in dollars

3 numbers, in order of how much they tell you:

  • Citations. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot and Bing, plus your own monthly prompt tests for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google.
  • Referral traffic and orders. Sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in your analytics. Shopify says orders through Agentic Storefronts carry ChatGPT referral attribution.
  • Contribution margin from those orders, by product. This is the number to report, because it tells you whether AI is sending you buyers of the products that pay.

Paid placement in AI answers is a separate decision, and we ran the maths in should your brand run ChatGPT ads. For the wider toolkit, see our best AI tools for ecommerce.

StoreHero now has its own AEO product, StoreHero AI Search. It asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI the questions your buyers ask, shows where you're named and who's named instead, and ranks the gaps by what to close first. Then it writes the content to close them: researched, SEO-backed content for your store, ready to publish once you approve it.

The overview: how often AI names you for non-branded buyer questions, where you rank when it does, and the actions most likely to move it. Illustrative example for a US fashion brand; the data is made up to show the product.
  • Get on it early. Most brands aren't tracking AI answers yet, and 89% never appear in category answers, per the Victorious study above. The reviews, mentions and pages you build now are what the answers draw on, before your competitors catch up.
  • Rely less on ad spend. An organic AI recommendation doesn't charge you per click. Every buyer question your brand wins is an order you didn't have to buy through Meta or Google.
  • Get on top of the LLMs. See your visibility score, average placement, sentiment and share of voice for each engine, split into branded and non-branded prompts, plus the sources each answer cites, so you know which page, listing or review site to fix next.

The leaderboard is usually the eye-opener. It ranks you against every brand AI recommends for your buyers' questions, including ones you weren't tracking, so you can see who is actually winning the recommendations you want.

The leaderboard: you against every competitor AI names, and the untracked brands it recommends too. Illustrative example for a US fashion brand; the data is made up to show the product.

The prompts view runs each buyer question on every engine and shows where you're named, and at what position, next to your classic Google rank. A question where you rank #3 on Google but never appear in ChatGPT or Copilot is exactly the kind of gap it surfaces.

Because it sits alongside StoreHero's profit dashboard, you can point that work at the products with the highest contribution margin first.

Key takeaways

  • AEO (answer engine optimization) is getting your brand and products named, and your pages cited, in AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • AI referrals to US retail sites grew 62% year on year in July 2026 and converted 60% better than non-AI traffic, per Adobe.
  • Answer engines combine what they learned in training with live web searches, fan one question out into many searches, cite their sources and favour brands that several independent sources agree on.
  • AEO runs on SEO: Google says pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in AI Overviews, and no special markup or AI text file is required.
  • For a Shopify store the levers are crawler access, product and collection pages, FAQs and comparisons, product schema, clean feeds, detailed reviews and third-party mentions.
  • Judge AI visibility by the contribution margin of the products that show up, not share of voice, and fix your highest-margin products first.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO mean?

In marketing and ecommerce, AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of getting your brand, products and pages named and cited when people ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question. The same letters are also American Eagle Outfitters' stock ticker and a customs term (Authorised Economic Operator), which is why the search results are mixed.

What is AEO in marketing?

AEO is a discovery channel that sits next to SEO and paid search. Instead of ranking a page in a list of links, you're trying to be one of the 3 or 4 brands an AI assistant recommends, which depends on your own pages, your product data and what reviews, Reddit, press and round-ups say about you. For ecommerce brands, StoreHero's view is that it should be measured in contribution margin from the products AI names, not mentions alone.

What is AEO vs SEO?

SEO earns a position in a search engine's list of results; AEO earns a mention or citation inside an AI-written answer. They overlap heavily, because Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode only use indexed pages and other assistants search the web too. The differences are that AEO rewards answering specific questions, agreement across third-party sources and clean product data, and that a shortlist of 3 or 4 names leaves no lower positions to fall back on.

How do you do answer engine optimization?

For an ecommerce store: let the AI search crawlers in, write product and collection pages that answer real buyer questions in plain text, add FAQs and honest comparisons, mark up price, stock, reviews and returns with Product schema, keep product feeds clean, collect detailed reviews and earn mentions in round-ups, press and Reddit. Then test the prompts your buyers ask every month, starting with your highest contribution margin products.

What's the best answer engine optimization tool?

StoreHero AI Search tracks how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI name your brand for the questions your buyers ask, shows which sources they cite and ranks the actions to close the gaps, alongside StoreHero's product-level contribution margin. Other prompt-tracking tools include Profound, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush's AI toolkit, and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows Copilot and Bing citations for free.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. AI answers are built on search: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages from Google's index, Copilot is grounded in Bing, and ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web live. What has changed is what wins: pages that answer specific questions, structured product data and third-party agreement matter more than they did when the goal was a blue link.
