Shopify now has an official connector for Claude and a plugin for ChatGPT, and both take a few minutes to set up. What matters more is what the AI can see once it's connected, because Shopify knows what you sold, not what you made.

You can connect Claude or ChatGPT to your Shopify store in a few minutes and ask it about your business in plain English. This guide covers the setup for both, what the AI can actually see once it's connected, and the prompts worth starting with, because Shopify knows what you sold but not what you made.

What you can do once Claude or ChatGPT is connected

The point of connecting is that you stop digging through dashboards and exporting spreadsheets, and just ask the question you actually have. You don't need to be an analyst, write a formula or know which report holds the answer. Here's what that looks like (illustrative answers from a connected store, not real data):

"How did last week compare with the week before?"

Claude: Net sales were $48,200, up 9% on 4% more orders. Average order value rose from $61 to $64, mostly from the new bundle.

"Which products are about to sell out?"

Claude: 3 products will run out within 14 days at their current sales rate. The linen shirt in medium has 22 units left and sells about 3 a day.

"Which Meta campaigns actually made us money last month?"

ChatGPT: Broad prospecting made $6,140 contribution margin (21% of its sales) after product costs, shipping and ad spend. Video retargeting had a 2.6 ROAS but lost $1,180 once costs were counted, so cut that first.

"Which discount code is costing us the most?"

Claude: Orders using SUMMER30 made $9.40 contribution margin each, against $21.10 for orders with no code. Raising its minimum spend would protect about $2,300 a month.

The first two work with Shopify's own connector. The last two need ad spend and costs as well, which is why the way you connect matters.

The 3 ways to connect Shopify to Claude or ChatGPT

All three run on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard Claude and ChatGPT use to plug into other tools.

Shopify's connector is the official one. It's listed in Claude's connector directory as made by Shopify and verified by Anthropic, with 25 tools covering orders, customers, products, inventory, discount codes and an analytics tool, and ChatGPT offers the same thing as the Shopify plugin. There's no extra Shopify fee for either. If you'd rather have AI inside your Shopify admin than in Claude or ChatGPT, that's Sidekick.

How to connect Claude to Shopify

Use a desktop browser. Each step covers both routes, so skip the half you don't need.

  1. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Shopify's connector: select Discover, search for Shopify and select Connect to Claude. A cross-channel MCP: select + Add, then Add custom connector, give it a name, paste the provider's server URL (StoreHero's is https://app.storehero.ai/api/mcp) and select Add, then Connect.
  3. Sign in when asked. Shopify sends you to your admin to pick the store and approve read-only or write access (start with read-only). StoreHero asks you to sign in to a StoreHero account with admin access.
  4. In a new chat, select +, then Connectors, check the toggle is on and ask your question. The first time Claude uses a tool it asks you to Allow once or Always allow.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds the connector for the organisation first. Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, with Free accounts limited to 1, according to Anthropic's guide.

How to connect ChatGPT to Shopify

  1. Shopify's plugin: open Settings, then Plugins, select Shopify and Install plugin, then approve read-only or write access in your Shopify admin.
  2. A cross-channel MCP: turn on developer mode first. In Settings, open Apps, then Advanced settings, and switch on Developer mode. It's available on Pro (read-only tools), Business and Enterprise/Edu, but not Free or Plus, and on Business only admins and owners can turn it on (OpenAI's guide).
  3. Go to Apps, then Create. Name it, paste the server URL, choose OAuth, tick that you trust the connector and select Create, then sign in when the popup opens.
  4. In a chat, type @Shopify or select + and switch your connector on (custom connectors also need developer mode on in that menu), then ask.

StoreHero takes about 2 minutes in Claude and 3 in ChatGPT, and our setup guides for Claude and ChatGPT have screenshots of each screen.

What the AI can see

Comparison of what the AI can see with the Shopify connector alone versus the StoreHero profit MCP (shown with the StoreHero logo): both see orders and sales, products and inventory, and customers; cost per item is partial with Shopify alone (only as entered); ad spend from Meta, Google and TikTok, 3PL, packing and outside shipping costs, Klaviyo email revenue and contribution margin are only visible with the profit MCP; editing products and discounts is possible with Shopify write access but not with the read-only profit MCP
Shopify knows what you sold. Answering what you made needs ad spend and costs as well. Sources: Shopify connector docs, Claude directory listing, StoreHero MCP docs.

Claude and ChatGPT only see what a connector's tools return, within the access you approved. Shopify's connector covers orders, products, customers and inventory, but not your ad spend, 3PL costs or email revenue, so a "most profitable product" answer from Shopify alone is really gross profit, which is why ROAS and profitability are different questions.

Why plugging in Shopify and Meta isn't the same as asking about profit

Adding a Meta Ads connector next to Shopify's is a good start, and for quick questions it's all you need. Ask a money question that spans both, though, and the AI has to stitch two sets of numbers together on the spot. Three things go wrong.

1. The same word means different things

Ask for "revenue" and the number depends on which tool answers. Shopify alone reports gross sales, net sales and total sales, Meta reports the orders it credits to your ads, Klaviyo the orders it credits to your emails, and Google Analytics the purchases its tag caught.

Ask for revenue, get six answers: for the same store and week, Shopify gross sales $52,400, Shopify net sales $46,900, Shopify total sales $51,800, Meta Ads purchase value $38,200, Klaviyo attributed revenue $12,600 and Google Analytics revenue $44,100. Illustrative numbers.
One store, one week, six correct answers to "what was our revenue?". Illustrative numbers.

None of these is wrong, but add Meta's figure to Shopify's and you get an answer that looks precise and isn't. The fix is a semantic layer, which is just an agreed dictionary: one definition of revenue, net sales, contribution margin and "new customer", used for every question by every person and every AI tool.

2. The costs aren't in either platform

Shopify knows your product cost if you've entered it, and Meta knows ad spend. Neither knows your 3PL invoice, shipping labels, returns or payment fees outside Shopify Payments, and profit lives in that gap.

3. A live connection isn't a data pipeline

A connector fetches a page of results at the moment you ask. A data pipeline, or ETL in data-speak, does the work in advance: it pulls every order, refund and ad cost daily, removes duplicates, lines up timezones and currencies, keeps product costs as they were on the day of each sale, and joins each order to its costs and the ad spend that won it.

Where StoreHero fits

That's the job StoreHero does underneath. It runs the pipeline for Shopify, Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, Klaviyo and your cost data every day and applies one set of definitions to all of it, so when you connect the StoreHero MCP, Claude or ChatGPT is asking questions of numbers that are already cleaned, joined and defined. Keep Shopify's connector alongside it for store admin.

10 prompts worth asking first

Paste these into a new chat with your connector on. Shopify alone works with the official connector; cross-channel needs ad spend and costs, so it needs a profit MCP.

Profit

Give me a sales and profit snapshot for last month vs the same month last year: net sales, ad spend, contribution margin and MER. State the exact dates and timezone you used. (Cross-channel)

Which discount codes in the last 60 days left orders unprofitable once COGS, shipping and fees are counted? (Cross-channel)

Products and inventory

Check the answer before you act

  • Dates and timezone: "last month" can mean the calendar month or the last 30 days, and the AI may use UTC rather than your store's timezone, so ask it to state the exact range.
  • Definitions: ask ChatGPT for contribution margin and it often gives CM1 or CM2 when you mean CM3, after marketing, so spell out yours (our contribution margin guide sets out all three).
  • Numbers that weren't fetched: if a tool call fails, a model can still write plausible figures, so check the answer came from a tool call.
  • Row caps: Shopify's connector lists orders 50 at a time, so ask for analytics queries rather than order lists, and ask how many orders it counted.
  • More than one store: start a new chat after switching stores and name the store every time (see managing multiple Shopify stores).

The quickest sanity check is to compare one number, net sales is easiest, with the same dates in your Shopify admin.

Is it safe?

  • Read-only by default: Shopify's connector can only change data if you approve write access, and never more than the staff account that connected it. StoreHero's MCP is read-only.
  • Hard limits: even with write access, it can't issue refunds, cancel orders, edit your live theme or change payments, taxes or domains, according to Shopify's guidance on third-party AI tools.
  • Switching it off: uninstall it from your Shopify admin, or disconnect it in Claude under Customize > Connectors or in ChatGPT under Settings > Plugins.
Ask Claude or ChatGPT what you actually made

StoreHero joins Shopify, Meta, Google, TikTok and Klaviyo with your real COGS, shipping and fees, then hands it to Claude or ChatGPT through one read-only MCP. Setup takes about 2 minutes.

Connect StoreHero to Claude

Key takeaways

  • Claude and ChatGPT both connect to Shopify in minutes, through Shopify's official connector or a cross-channel MCP such as StoreHero.
  • Once connected, you ask questions in plain English and get answers in seconds, without being an analyst.
  • Shopify alone can't see ad spend, 3PL costs or email revenue, and each tool defines "revenue" differently, so profit questions need a cleaned, defined data layer under the AI.
  • Start with read-only access. Even with write access, the connector can't refund or cancel orders, touch your live theme, or change payments, taxes or domains.
  • Custom MCP connectors work on every Claude plan (1 on Free) but need Pro, Business or Enterprise/Edu and developer mode in ChatGPT.
  • Before acting on an answer, check its dates, timezone and definitions against your Shopify admin.
